A Scary Afternoon

Thursday, August 30th, 2007

Last Friday afternoon was one of those times that a cafe like Aquavue never wants to see. For some time last week the Weather Bureau had been forecasting some wild weather for Hervey Bay but it never seemed to arrive … until last Friday afternoon.

In the space of a few seconds the weather went from overcast and light rain to storm force winds gusting to 105 km/h and very heavy rain. Trees were blown down along The Esplanade, some of our tables were blown onto the beach and we had to close for business.

Fortunately none of our jet skis were in the water at the time and the storm hit in one of those lulls between morning tea and lunch when there were few customers in the cafe and none were sitting out on the deck. Hours later when the storm finally blew itself out and we could assess the damage we discovered just how lucky we were.

Apart from a lot of leaf litter we had no damage but others weren’t so lucky. Just up the road a new amenities block that the Council was building was damaged when a tree came down and we later heard that a cafe down at Urangan had to close for several days while they cleaned up the storm damage.

But this is Hervey Bay and the sun came up Saturday morning and the days since have been perfect as you can see from this photo taken from our webcam on Monday morning.

Wild Weather in Hervey Bay

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2007

Here in Hervey Bay we’ve been warned of some very rough weather heading our way. It was supposed to be here yesterday - but as you can see from this webcam photo it hadn’t arrived by mid-afternoon. The threat of the approaching storm certainly didn’t scare away those who wanted to hire a jet ski in Hervey Bay

Then it was supposed to arrive overnight but here’s the view from the Aquavue webcam just a few minutes ago

Early morning calm on the beach at Aquavue

I’m sure the wild weather will arrive but when you have beautiful sunny days and calm mornings like this on the beach at Aquavue we all don’t mind if the storm never arrives. :)

What Glorious Hervey Bay Weather!

Wednesday, August 15th, 2007

There’s a motel further down the Esplanade here in Hervey Bay that’s suggesting this is paradise and they can’t be far wrong. Here is an image taken from our webcam just a few minutes ago.

A glorious day at Aquavue Hervey Bay

The sun is shining, the birds are singing and even though there’s some renovations going on today the place is really jumping. And it’s no wonder, the days are just fantastic with temperatures in the mid 20s (that’s Celsius) and even the water temperature is good.

On Friday we had 80 kids from the United Kingdom here and they had a great time on the kayaks out in the Bay. On the weekend the the jet skis were very popular and so were the Seakarts.

I still have to pinch myself sometimes to convince myself I’m not dreaming and I really am here. Like a couple of our regulars, I come from winters in the Central Tablelands of New South Wales where some days the maximum never rose above 10 and the frost stayed on the ground all day.

Yep, in comparison this really is paradise.

Big Weekend Ahead

Friday, August 10th, 2007

It’s Whale Festival weekend here in Hervey Bay, the weather forecast is for more great weather and that means we’re in for another big weekend here at Aquavue. On Sunday all the action will be happening down at Urangan Boat Harbour and we’ll be there so be sure to say hello.

That doesn’t mean that things will be quiet here at the cafe though. Last weekend was a very busy time for us and Sunday always seems to be the day people want to come down and enjoy the sunshine and our hospitality.

I guess that with crowds like this we must be doing something right.

Where Did the Time Go?

Monday, August 6th, 2007

I can’t believe that it’s nearly two weeks since I last posted here … where did all that time go?

I actually do know where all the time went … this has been a busy time for us here at Aquavue and not only in the cafe part of the business. Even though it’s winter here in Hervey Bay right now we have been very busy with jet ski hire and seakart hire too and I guess when people can have fun like this out on the waters of Hervey Bay it’s no surprise that we’re busy.

We did think that things would quieten down a little after the school holidays but not this year. This year we’ve seen no real drop off in patronage and now we’re at the point where it will just go on getting busier. Whale season has started and the number of no vacancy signs going up along The Esplanade is on the increase.

Next weekend is the start of the Hervey Bay Whale Festival and Aquavue is proud to be a support sponsor of the festival this year. There’s a packed programme that will run right throughout the Festival and you can find out more about it here.

We hope we’ll see you there and you’re always welcome here at Aquavue Cafewatersports.
