A Scary Afternoon
Thursday, August 30th, 2007Last Friday afternoon was one of those times that a cafe like Aquavue never wants to see. For some time last week the Weather Bureau had been forecasting some wild weather for Hervey Bay but it never seemed to arrive … until last Friday afternoon.
In the space of a few seconds the weather went from overcast and light rain to storm force winds gusting to 105 km/h and very heavy rain. Trees were blown down along The Esplanade, some of our tables were blown onto the beach and we had to close for business.
Fortunately none of our jet skis were in the water at the time and the storm hit in one of those lulls between morning tea and lunch when there were few customers in the cafe and none were sitting out on the deck. Hours later when the storm finally blew itself out and we could assess the damage we discovered just how lucky we were.
Apart from a lot of leaf litter we had no damage but others weren’t so lucky. Just up the road a new amenities block that the Council was building was damaged when a tree came down and we later heard that a cafe down at Urangan had to close for several days while they cleaned up the storm damage.
But this is Hervey Bay and the sun came up Saturday morning and the days since have been perfect as you can see from this photo taken from our webcam on Monday morning.
